The idea came to me in a dream, and was somewhat inspired by 
's "Mantigryllus"
A (speculative) large predatory Weta, with highly evolved raptorial fore-limbs for seizing and crushing prey. The femur of the middle leg also has spines, used to help hold and subdue larger prey. Because of the position of the limbs in relation to the head, prey is often stunned or crushed first, and then moved to the mouth where it is macerated.
The forelimb consists of an enlarged trochanter, spurred femur and spurred tibia, with reduced tarsus, much like a mandid.
The modified forelimbs would also be used for digging burrows, where the insect would reside during the day. Is body is knobbly and ridged, to mimic wood and stone.

Like some real species that could have evolved around 30 to maybe 40 cm long on new Zealand hunting small birds and reptiles like a mantis with slicing jaws for tearing apart flesh and making unique sounds for defence and communication, just like king Kong movie maybe hunting at times in small groups to bring down some larger prey
